Village’s Annual Relay For Life is March 5!

POMPANO BEACH – 2/18/2015 – Chances are we all know someone who has tackled the giant monster known as cancer. It is a horrific disease that affects millions of people each year.

John Knox Village demonstrates its dedication to the fight against cancer by hosting its Annual Relay For Life Walk, celebrating an evening of life and hope. This year’s Relay For Life will be held on Thursday, March 5 at 6 p.m.

Similar to previous years, participants can expect an official Proclamation by the City of Pompano Beach, as well as receive information from various physicians and other guest speakers, followed by a dessert reception. The event will also feature a number of inspiring testimonials from resident and employee survivors.

Starting behind East Lake, Relay For Life will open with a special “sashing” ceremony, which honors those who won their courageous battle with cancer. Then, our attendees will take a group walk around Lake Maggie, which is beautifully lit with luminaries that recognize individuals who are battling with or have passed away from cancer. Relay For Life ends with the reception back at East Lake.

All donations raised from the event will go to the American Cancer Society and its extensive medical research efforts. Relay For Life is hosted in over 5,200 communities in 20 different countries and has raised over $400 million each year. For more information about Relay For Life, visit (www.relayforlife.org).

The 2014 JKV’s Relay For Life raised more than $7,000. The Village is aiming to surpass that number this year. There is a $10 donation minimum, which includes a Relay For Life t-shirt.

“Even if you are unable to make a contribution, this is a tremendous opportunity to support The Village and the cause by just attending the inspiring event,” said Michele Smith, Activities Manager. “It also means a lot to our residents and caregivers who need the support of others.”

The Village hosts three walks each year that benefit local organizations. In addition to the Relay For Life, there is an Annual Heart Walk in February (American Heart Association) and Walk to End Alzheimer’s in October (Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter).

John Knox Village is a not-for-profit continuing care community that provides a full range of life-care services for those aged 62 and greater. The Village is located at 651 S.W. Sixth Street in Pompano Beach, just east of I-95 and south of Atlantic Boulevard. For more information, contact our Marketing Department at (954) 783-4040.

One of the highlights of John Knox Village’s Annual Relay For Life is the Luminaria Ceremony held behind East Lake. The sentimental candles are placed around Lake Maggie in honor of those individuals currently battling cancer and others who have lost their battle.

The Village’s Relay For Life features a number of guest speakers, including City of Pompano Beach Mayor Lamar Fisher, who always shares a special proclamation for the event.
