On April 11, 2015, John Knox Village celebrated the life of John “Jack” Deinhardt. Eulogies shared by family and friends highlighted the courageousness and success of a businessman who made a difference in the lives of others.

A lasting legacy, Jack Deinhardt paid it forward by establishing The Community Foundation of Broward. The tribute allowed me to reflect on the numerous contributions our residents make daily.

The month of May 2015 represents the 50^th Anniversary of Older Americans Month, honoring older adults who make a difference. This year’s theme is entitled “Get Into the Act.”

The images and stories of this month’s issue of the Voice truly celebrate how residents “Get Into the Act” by leading and encouraging active lifestyles. Healthy aging, like many aspects of life, begins with a willingness and attitude.

The pursuit of life-long learning and how it brings generations together reminds me of the important stories that we all have to share.

• Our onsite collaborations with For Him Christian Academy engaging residents and elementary students in the joy of reading and sharing stories.
• Innovation Charter School (located in the adjacent Forum Building) provides learning opportunities for students of all ages who are just beginning to explore.
• Road Scholar travel and learning adventures along with local university and college programs provides new friendships and inspiration across generations.
• Fun in fitness is pursued daily with a variety of aerobics, aquatics and personal training classes. The importance of staying fit and moving daily is motivating when residents and staff encourage each other in this daily scrimmage.
• “LifeBio,” a unique storytelling format, is providing a simplified process for residents, staff and their families to create their own book of life’s adventures. LifeBio is bringing people together, promoting better communication and deepening relationships. Discovering and sharing these stories has revealed the many innate talents, knowledge, experiences and shared passions of our residents and staff. Filmmaker, radio announcer, spiritual leader, musician and performer, master gardener, chef and culinary “foodie,” grandparents who listen and volunteers who give of their time and finances to make this world a better place!

The insights I’ve learned from these incredible relationships and experiences will be remembered until my last breath. Just like Jack Deinhardt made a difference in the lives of others, I have realized that making a difference is a life-long pursuit.
