What is a Life Plan Community?

life plan community

The rock ‘n roll generation wants a life plan.

A retirement community like John Knox Village is now referred to as a Life Plan Community, or place where seniors can plan for future stages of life during retirement: whether that is independent living in a villa or apartment, or care in an assisted living or a skilled nursing center such as The Woodlands at John Knox Village set to open May 26.

A Life Plan Community, like John Knox Village, was previously branded a Continuing Care Retirement Community or CCRC.

A Life Plan Community, like John Knox Village, was previously branded a Continuing Care Retirement Community or CCRC. LeadingAge, an association of not-for-profit aging service providers, polled seniors over two years and discovered that 84% of future consumers age 65 and younger wanted to emphasize life, experience and vitality over a moniker that reinforced non-stop levels of care and dependency while aging.

“It became clear that the name CCRC no longer did an adequate job of creating the best perception among tomorrow’s older adults,” said the then LeadingAge President and CEO Larry Minnix in a PRWeb article online. “At the core of the decision to move to a community is having the right plan for what the next stage of life has to offer. We feel the ‘Life Plan Community’ name encompasses that very well.”

Residents of John Knox Village recognize that the name change reflects a younger demographic but also prudence.

“We understand that younger people may not want to be associated with care, retirement or disability,” said Diane Dalsimer, who, along with her husband John, is an active  11-year resident of the John Knox Village Life Plan Community.

“This is not just senior resort living,” she said. “This community is for people who have thoughtfully planned their future.”
