How can I help my family understand the reasons for my move?
It goes without saying — moving from your present home to a residential senior community is a big decision. In many ways, it’s a family decision that affects not only you — but your loved ones, too.
That’s why it’s important that your family members are fully on board and support you in the decision you make.
Talk it over with your family. Discuss candidly the primary reasons why you are considering a move (e.g. health concerns, minimizing household chores and home maintenance, opportunities for socializing).
Your transition will be made easier by ensuring your family’s questions are answered, and they are well-informed. When the time is right, offer them a tour of John Knox Village. Let them meet our staff members and residents and hear first-hand how supportive the community is and how satisfied current residents are.
These testimonies will go a long way toward easing your loved ones’ concerns and convincing them you are making the right move.
Above all, remember that your children and other family members love and care about you. Your happiness and well-being are their utmost concerns. When they see you are confident about your future, they will be confident — and supportive, too.
What can I expect in the way of a continuum of care as my health needs change?
John Knox Village is a premier Continuing Care Retirement Community, offering a full continuum of care, ranging from fully independent units to assistance with personal care in assisted living apartments to long-term care in a skilled nursing facility.
CCRCs offer a tiered approach to the aging process, accommodating residents’ changing needs. Upon entering, healthy adults can reside independently in villas or apartments. When assistance with everyday activities becomes necessary, they can move into assisted living or nursing care facilities.
These communities give older adults the option to live in one location for the duration of their life, with much of their future care already figured out. This can provide a great level of comfort to seniors and their loved ones and take much of the stress out of the caregiving relationship.
Types of Contracts
At John Knox Village, we offer two basic types of contracts for CCRCs:
- Life Care or Extended Contract: This is the most expensive option, but offers unlimited assisted living, medical treatment and skilled nursing care without additional charges.
- Rental Contract
It is very important to review each option as well as the long-term financial plan to support them. It is also important to know that the community being considered will be financially viable over the long term.
Request a weekend stay at the community to ensure it’s the right choice.
What can I expect from John Knox Village in helping me to preserve my finances?
For those of retirement age, preservation of available finances is of utmost importance now more than ever. Residents have a right to expect that the senior living community they choose as their home is governed and operated in a manner that allows it to remain financially sound and meet its long-term commitments to residents.
John Knox Village is a financially sound, fiscally responsible organization. We adhere to established industry standards for full financial disclosure concerning our operations. These Best Practices are established by LeadingAge (formerly the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging). In addition, John Knox Village is regulated by the Office of Insurance Regulation, a division of the Florida Department of Financial Services. Also, our assisted living, Health Center and Home Health Agency are licensed under the Agency for Healthcare Administration.
It is important to us that each resident thoroughly understand our overall financial condition, the specific terms of the agreement for housing, care and other services, as well as our policies governing refund and/or repayment of initial entry fees.
In addition, our Life Care communities do not raise monthly fees when a resident transitions from independent living to another level of care. Thus residents’ investments are protected from ever-increasing health care costs. Moreover, monthly fees are predictable, as fee increases occur only annually if necessary to meet the cost of living.
What is your philosophy toward giving back to the community?
We strongly support community involvement on the part of our residents and staff. Our Sharing and Caring Program at John Knox Village is one of the keys to making the Village a great place to live and work.
Through this program, the Village has long been a sponsor of and contributor to the American Cancer Society through the Relay For Life, the American Heart Association through the Heart Walk and the Alzheimer’s Association through the Alzheimer’s Walk because these diseases touch so many people in our community.
As part of our philosophy on wellness, the Village residents and employees participate in the annual Heart Walk and Memory Walk on our beautiful 64-acre campus. Since 2003, the Village has sponsored the Survivor’s reception for the local Relay For Life. This past year, the Village held its own “mini-Relay” on campus. Over 200 residents, staff, family and members of the community participated in honoring over 60 survivors and in raising funds for the fight against cancer.
Other community support includes involvement in Habitat for Humanity, helping local schools, assisting underserved children in attending summer camp, participating in community health fairs, partnering with homeless support organizations and helping with recovery from natural emergencies.
