Meeting an Inspirational Individual

On a recent tour of the Leonard Florence Living Center, a Green House Home in Chelsea, MA, representatives of our Board of Directors and management were inspired by Steve Saling.

Steve, a professionally trained landscape architect, is an Ambassador for the first Urban Green House Home (skilled nursing residence), which opened its doors more than six years ago. Utilizing his gifts of landscape design and technology, the community consisting of 10 homes with 10 elders in each home has served as a model for replication in transferring housing and long-term care nationally.

After hearing Steve’s story, his desire is to make a difference in the lives of individuals afflicted by ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

Resident Board Member Carol Kamman shared, “Steve, ALS may have taken from you certain physical abilities, your smile and innovative mind encourages us all.”

His attitude, courage, determination and humor reminded us that when faced with significant life challenges, we have choices. Steve’s choice – continue to seek meaning and purpose for his life.

It was a powerful message and memorable experience that reminded us all why we were developing this model at John Knox Village.

Enjoy the Holidays

florida retirement community

The holidays at John Knox Village are filled with many celebrations. My wife Carol and I will celebrate our third anniversary on December 15 and our third year as Florida residents next month.

We are grateful for the numerous friendships we have developed by being a part of this special community.

As we take time to rest and renew with family and friends, I’m reminded of a quote by Victor Hugo.

“Have courage for the great sorrows, patience for the small ones, and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily tasks, go to sleep in peace. God is awake.”

Know that our problems are not on your shoulders alone…

Happy Holidays!
